Often, even when help is available, it is not always accepted. Students sometimes have a difficult time asking for help when it is needed.
Several Tomorrow’s Genius students have remarked that asking for help in class is not always an option. No student wants to be the one to ask the “stupid” question or to delay the class’s progress. Now, even though we say that there is no such thing as a stupid question, students do not always think that way. By saying, “I don’t understand” a student is admitting that he needs help. As adults, most of us have realized that there is nothing wrong with asking for help, as we know that no individual person knows everything.
For students however, there is often a hesitation that comes from peer pressure and from general feelings of pride. Last year, a student signed into Tomorrow’s Genius the night before his history Bagrut. He said to the teacher, “I don’t know anything and I have a Bagrut tomorrow. Help me.” Our teacher became concerned, and she offered to help the student as much as possible. She asked the student why he didn’t come for help earlier, even a few days before. The student answered, that he didn’t want to tell his teacher he needed help, because she would have yelled at him for slacking off. Well, to make a long story short, we all know how this story ended. The TG teacher spent 90 minutes reviewing the Bagrut mikud with the student, hoping that she could at least send him on his way with a glimpse of hope. The student actually felt much more positive after the session, but we all know that by this point it was probably too late for the student to pass his test.
As the school year goes forward, we as teachers and parents need to make sure that our students do not reach the point of this boy. There is no doubt, that getting a teen to spend extra time studying with a teacher is a challenge. After a long school day, homework and studying is the last thing most students want to be doing. Luckily, by combining great teaching with great technology, students now have a new option of getting help online, when they need it.

לעיתים קרובות, כשעזרה קיימת לא תמיד נעזרים בה. ובגאונים של מחר אנחנו יודעים שלפעמים תלמידים מתקשים לבקש עזרה כשצריכים לכך.
תלמידים אחדים מגאונים של מחר ציינו שלבקש עזרה באמצע השיעור איננו מהווה אופציה בשבילם מפני שהם לא רוצים להיות אלו ששואלים את השאלה “המטופשת” או לשאול שאלות שיעכבו את התקדמות הכיתה. ואפילו כשאנחנו אומרים שאין דבר כזה שאלה מטופשת, התלמידים לא תמיד חושבים ככה. כשתלמיד אומר “אני לא מבין” הוא בעצם מודה שהוא צריך עזרה. כמבוגרים, אנחנו יודעים שאין שום דבר רע בלבקש עזרה מכיוון שאנחנו יודעים שאין אחד שיודע הכל.
פעמים רבות תלמידים מהססים לבקש עזרה כתוצאה מלחץ חברתי או מהרגשה כללית של התנשאות. בשנה שעברה, תלמיד נכנס לפלטפורמה של “גאונים של מחר” בלילה לפני הבגרות בהיסטוריה. הוא אמר למורה: “אני לא יודע כלום ויש לי בגרות מחר, תעזרי לי”. המורה הייתה מודאגת והציעה לתלמיד את העזרה המירבית ככל שניתן. היא שאלה את התלמיד למה הוא לא ביקש עזרה יותר מוקדם, אפילו לפני כמה ימים והתלמיד ענה שהוא לא רצה לשאול את המורה בכיתה משום שאילו היה שואל את המורה היא הייתה צועקת עליו שהוא מתעצל בלימודיו. ולכן כדי לקצר בסיפור, אנחנו כולנו יודעים איך נגמר הסיפור הזה. המורה מ-”גאונים של מחר” עבדה עם התלמיד יותר מ-90 דקות בניסיון לעזור לאותו תלמיד כמה שיותר במעט זמן שנותר לו לפני המבחן. התלמיד הרגיש יותר טוב אחרי המפגש עם המורה אבל כולנו יודעים שזה כנראה היה מאוחר מדי מכדי שהתלמיד יצליח לעבור את המבחן.
ככל שמתקדמת שנת הלימודים, אנחנו כהורים ומורים צריכים לדאוג שתלמידנו לא יגיעו למצב של אותו תלמיד לעיל. אין ספק שזה לוקח הרבה מאמץ להושיב נער או נערה בגיל ההתבגרות לפני מורה בשביל תוספת זמן של לימודים ושיעורי בית. אחרי יום ארוך בבית הספר, שיעורי בית ולימודים זה הדבר האחרון שכל תלמיד היה רוצה לעשות. למזלנו, על ידי שילוב של הוראה מצוינת עם טכנולוגיה, תלמידים יוכלו עכשיו לקבל עזרה מתי שנוח להם לקבל אותה.
